Midwifery Services Frequently Asked Questions
What is a midwife?
Nurse-midwives are advanced practice nurses who accompany patients in creating an individualized, holistic birthing experience. We aim to empower women throughout pregnancy and the entire lifespan by providing them with the resources and care they deserve. Midwives can help support a low intervention birth experience, providing the freedom and education for women to make informed decisions.
The Certified Nurse-Midwives of Elite Women’s Health focuses on delivering family-centered natural birth experiences, where women have the power to plan the type of birth experience they desire.
Pregnancy and childbirth are normal life events that are best protected through education and support, which is why midwives are there every step of the way. Our team works closely with you throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum to ensure the highest level of clinical care and patient satisfaction.
What are the benefits of midwifery care?
Pregnancy and childbirth is a time where women prioritize their safety and well being more than ever. Midwives are experts at facilitating this transition and making you feel more at ease.
We monitor your pregnancy, your general health, and well-being
We are careful to consider other conditions that may impact the health of you and your baby
We also formulate a specialized birth process, keeping your beliefs and needs in mind.
Our philosophy is human-centered, which means we emphasize spending time with our patients, empowering women, and educating and supporting women throughout pregnancy.
We encourage patients to move around and drink during labor. Because of the freedom and support offered, people who utilize the services of midwives are often more satisfied during their childbirth and are in control of the process.
Do you offer home births or zero intervention care?
The midwives of Elite Women’s Health can help support a low intervention or unmedicated birth experience in the hospital environment. We have learned that this is the best link between health and safety and natural birth.
We know that some patients desire a “zero intervention” pregnancy and birth experience. Elite Women’s Health would like to ensure that our midwifery patients are aware that we order prenatal bloodwork, testing, and ultrasounds in order to monitor the health of patient and baby.
In addition, our midwives perform monitoring during labor in the hospital. This means that even for low intervention or unmedicated birth plans, we are unable to offer strictly “zero intervention” prenatal care or labor and delivery.
Can I use a midwife if I have a high risk pregnancy?
Yes! At Elite Women’s Health, our team of midwives prioritizes collaboration with our physicians and work closely together in order to maintain optimal health of mother and baby throughout pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
During labor and delivery, we are in constant communication with the physician about the plan of care. Midwives are trained in the natural process of birth. While you can utilize the services of a midwife in a higher risk pregnancy, a physician will be required to facilitate breech birth, preterm labor and delivery and emergency c-section deliveries.
How is the labor process facilitated?
Our Certified Nurse-Midwives can help with your low intervention birth process. This is a “natural” process, where certified nurse-midwives help ease the pain of pregnancy. Low-intervention birth programs provide alternatives for pain management including birth assistance, hydrotherapy, fetal monitoring, and specialized labor management.
Although we do not provide water births at Elite, we fully support and encourage laboring in the shower or tub. In terms of hydrotherapy, this provides comfort during the birthing process.
Our Certified Nurse-Midwives are trained in Spinning Babies ®, a widely-known inversion technique to help a breech baby flip to a head-down position.
We perform intermittent and continuous fetal monitoring
What is the role of a midwife postpartum?
Midwives are not just for childbirth!
The midwives of Elite Women’s Health provide comprehensive, holistic gynecologic care for women of all ages. We provide comprehensive well-woman services throughout the lifespan, and you can continue utilizing the services of our midwifery team indefinitely.
We provide services such as full spectrum gynecology, annual checkups, and contraception. Conditions and concerns related to sexual or reproductive health is within our specialty, and we provide a comprehensive range of well-women care.
After childbirth, it can be beneficial to have a sense of familiarity and continuity regarding your well-woman care, which midwives provide.
